OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAM
The mission of the Master of Science in Management Information Systems parallels the mission of VIU: students graduating with MS degree in MIS will be prepared to work with organizations to specify, design, develop, implement, and administer information technology solutions that address the needs of organization.

The Master of Science in Management Information Systems degree is designed to give students the background needed to develop and manage organizations' information resources, technology, and infrastructure. It will serve as a source of added knowledge for current graduates and practitioners interested in obtaining an advanced degree. It will also provide growth opportunities for the non-technical and non-business degree holders who find that their careers demand graduate level MIS training.

The program focuses on enhancing awareness in the information systems arena through the development of advanced competencies in computer applications development and use. Secondly, the program promotes ethical sensitivities through problem solving in a socio-technical business environment.

The MIS master's program develops professionals strong in interpersonal and team competencies such as leadership and change management skills. MIS graduates are prepared for careers in areas such as: Medical records and paperless systems, e-Business design and development, consulting, security risk assessment, internet marketing, audit control, business analysis, customer relationship management, ecommerce, legal forensics, enterprise resource planning, and/or supply chain management.

PROGRAM OUTCOME
Throughout the learning process at VIU MIS Program, students learn how to effectively define and represent both problems and the solutions needed to solve market problems. Throughout the course of study, students learn, and practice making ethical decisions. All students will learn how to utilize information and computer technology, while developing and maintaining a comprehension of the changing technology used in information systems and their application in business. Through this learning process, we expect students to own a desire for continuous improvement and demonstrate effective verbal, written, and listening communication skills.

Specifically, Management Information Systems students completing our program learn to:

  • Interface with other professionals to solve business-centered problems
  • Manage information systems development
  • Implement information systems development
  • Comprehend organizational and business structures and processes

Prerequisite Courses
All new MMIS students need certain basic skills to prepare them to succeed in the MMIS program.  Students who do not have the requisite background in business administration and information technology need to satisfy prerequisite courses before they enroll in core courses.
